The Animator's Journey

By Lenny Dutton

The main story is that the player wants to meet the animation Master, but needs to improve their knowledge and understanding of animation before they can begin. This mission exposes the player to many types of animation, from traditional animation, through to stop motion, through to 3D animation. It has them explore everything from how animation is used in video games, through to raising awareness for different issues/causes. The player also explores African and Japanese animation. We find out a little about the history of British animation, animation and propaganda and even Oscar nominated animations! The player also learns about the 12 principles of animation. At the end of the quest, they watch a short animation about the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development. They are shown a few examples of animations linked to Goal 5, Gender Equality, and tasked with finding animations linked to a different global goal. During the last page students present a design pitch, for their own video, linked to the a UN Global Goal. The task sheet I have attached here is for students doing the IB's MYP - so you may wish to change this last page/the task sheet. After completing this quest my students will do the first section of Pixar in a Box on Khan Academy. They will then storyboard and plan a short animation, and will create this using any method they choose. It could be anything from a 30 second flip book animation, to a 5 minute 2D computer animation, through to a 10 second character animation made in Blender! Enjoy - and let me know if you use it and how you adapt it !
